For all those who think we are in some kind of post racial America Consider this:
34% of black children and 39% of Hispanic children go to schools that are made up of at least 90% minority students. These schools are more likely to be underfunded and overcrowded.
Considering that fact that the majority of people in America are white, this shows continued racial segregation in American schools. According to the textbook I’m getting these statistics from* “Racial isolation is still the hallmark of the American educational system.” Since the civil rights era, the statistic above has gone down from 64.3% to 34%. Good news, however, the number of black students attending segregated schools has hovered around 33% since 1980. For Hispanic students, the statistic has gone up from 23% in 1968 to 39% in 2003.
We lie and tell ourselves that we are an integrated, “post-racial,” whatever the hell that means, society. But really, as soon as we started believing this, our progress has either stagnated or reversed. When are we going to stop deluding ourselves and start getting serious about real equality?
